Tech::SIRIUS
I didn't think I would ever subscibe to a satellite radio, neither XM or SIRIUS. But when I bought my new car, it came with a receiver installed and surprisingly with a 14 month free subscription!
So it has been a couple of months since I started listening to it, and I think I like it. Satellite radio differs from traditional FM/AM radio in many ways. First, they are 100% digital so it comes with all the benefits of being digital : excellent quality (when it works), extra information about the channel/content, and over hundred channels categorized (and thus browsable) by content type. Since the sigal is broadcasted from satellites, the contents are not local (good and bad).
The biggest problem is that it requires a direct line-of-sight to the satellite (which I think is south-east from the bay area). Sometimes when I am passing a big tree or going under an interchange on the highway, I would lose signal for a couple of seconds. If you are parked underground or going through thick trees in the sierra mountains, you're not gonna get anything at all.
And then you have to pay monthly subscription fee.
Since I am using the service for free, I am totally enjoying it. I love the variety of channels and the quality of them. (My favorites are CNBC, AltNation, and NFL) Whether I am going to pay for the service 12 months from now? - Check back September next year!
